Comparison of Methods
Types of hardness testing:
- Vickers Hardness Test: Uses a diamond pyramid indenter and is suitable for all metals and certain ceramics. It’s ideal for small parts or thin sections and provides precise, accurate measurements.
- Brinell Hardness Test: Employs a hard steel or carbide ball to make a larger indentation, making it suitable for materials with coarse structures like cast iron.
- Rockwell Hardness Test: Measures the depth of penetration by applying a preliminary minor load followed by a larger major load, using either a diamond cone or steel ball indenter. It’s quick and easy, making it ideal for production environments.
Understanding these tests helps in choosing the right material for the right purpose.
